Massachusetts Midwives Alliance
The Massachusetts Midwives Alliance (MMA) is a professional trade organization created by and for a dynamic and diverse group of midwives. The MMA was founded to build cooperation among midwives, and to promote midwifery as a means of improving heath care for women and their families. We promote practicing the Midwives Model of Care based on the fact that pregnancy and birth are normal life processes. This means we not only practice the Art of Midwifery, but also put strong emphasis on evidence-based medical practice, the safest form of care in Obstetrics today. We represent Certified Professional Midwives, Traditional/Direct-Entry Midwives and Certified Nurse Midwives who practice in hospital, home, and birth center environments.

Nurse Midwives
Today's Certified Nurse-Midwives are specially trained and highly skilled health care professionals, who provide obstetrical and gynecological care to women of all ages. They are registered nurses who have had advanced post-graduate education in obstetrics, gynecology and midwifery, obtained through accredited programs, most of which are affiliated with universities or medical schools across the United States. The average Nurse-Midwife has 20 years of clinical experience. Most CNM's hold advanced graduate degrees in health related fields.

CNM's deliver one in seven of all the babies born in Massachusetts with proven success! Most of these were born in hospitals and birth centers

Doulas of North America
DONA International began in 1992, when a small group of some of the foremost experts in childbirth decided that the time had come to promote the importance of emotional support for mothers and their partners during birth and the postpartum period. Convinced by significant evidence of the importance of doulas to a mother’s (and consequently to a family’s) wellbeing, they created an association for a relatively new group of professionals steeped in timeless tradition – doulas.

Birth Year Network
Birth Year Network was founded on the belief that birth is a natural process and that women and their families deserve access to healthcare that supports the way in which they choose to birth. We firmly support increasing the education and awareness of consumers and professionals regarding all aspects of reproductive care. Birth Year Network supports and encourages the practice of doulas, midwives, childbirth educators, lactation consultants, and other family support professions.

We encourage parents, practitioners, and hospitals to utilize the principles of the Mother Friendly Childbirth Initiative, the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative, and The Midwifery Model of Care as goals toward a mentally and physically healthy birth and parenting experience.
